After many twists and turns for legal purposes, finally in 2022 it was announced that the streamer Peacock and the study A24they launched the development of Crystal Lakea prequel series to the saga Friday the 13thdescribed as a “expanded prequel” from the original film, by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal).
The return of the slasher horror franchise Friday the 13thtook place fourteen years later after the release of the last film, the 2009 reboot, after being caught in a legal dispute between Sean Cunningham – director of the original film – and Victor Miller –writer of the original film– to have control of the property rights. Miller is part of the prequel series' creative team as executive producer.
Now, with 15 years without obtaining new material about Jason Vorhees, and some months without obtaining news about the project, Jeff Sneider, an expert in the Hollywood film and television industry, reported in The Insneider that A24 had reversed the development of Crystal Lakewhich had planned to start filming this year.
Sneider added:
“It is unclear whether this is a permanent or temporary decision, as A24 did not comment. Perhaps Peacock will help the exchanges shed more light on this project, which was announced in 2022.”
However, the horror media, Bloody Disgusting, clarifies that A24 HAS NOT CANCELED CRYSTAL LAKE.
The source reveals:
“We've confirmed that the series is still going on, but there are in fact some project shakeups going on behind the scenes. We are looking for more information. Stay tuned.”
It was previously announced that the series will be written by Bryan Fuller, who is also the showrunner and executive producer. While Victor Miller, screenwriter of the original film, will also executive produce alongside Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian and A24.
The “expanded prequel” to the original film will feature Jason Vorhees and his mother, Pamela Vorhees. With the story covering the life and times of these two characters.
Adrienne King, final girl de Friday the 13th, had signed a recurring role in the series. AND Kevin Williamson (Scream, The Faculty) as a scriptwriter for an episode.
