On the evening of Sunday, August 4, HBO and Max aired the finale of the second season of House of the Dragon.
The eighth episode titled “The Queen Who Ever Was”left the table set for the third season to start with the iconic Battle of the Gullet, a very important story from the book Fire & Blood of George R.R. Martinwhich serves as the basis for the prequel series Game of Thrones.
And while it is true that part of the audience was looking forward to seeing fire and blood at the conclusion of the second season, Ryan Condalco-creator and showrunner of the series, revealed at a press conference the reasons why we will not see the Battle of the Gully until season three:
“We were trying to give Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated action event, well, I would say maybe the second most anticipated of 'Fire & Blood', the time and space it deserves.. Obviously, as anyone who has seen the ending, We are preparing for that event. That event will happen very soon in terms of the narrative of 'House of the Dragon'.”
“Based on what we know now, this should be the most important thing we've accomplished to date. And we just wanted to have the time and space to do it at a level that would excite and satisfy the fans and in the way that it deserves.”
At the same press conference, Condal confirmed that House of the Dragon will consist of four seasonsPreparation for Season 3 will begin in the fall, with plans to begin filming in early 2025.
Condal added:
“We also wanted to create some expectations about it.”
“I know everyone wants this to come out every summer. It's just that the show is so complex that we're really doing multiple feature films every season. So I apologize for the wait, but I'll just say that if Rook's Rest and Red Sowing are any indication, we're going to score a big victory with the Battle of the Gully going forward.”
On Otto Hightower's brief appearance (Rhys Ifans) in the season two finale, apparently taken prisoner, the showrunner teased without many details:
“We were delighted to have Rhys back in the story, and I will just say that Otto Hightower’s story is not over yet.”
HOTD sets its plot in Westeros, 200 years prior to the events portrayed in GoT, before the fall of the Throne, exploring the beginning and end of House Targaryen after the unification of the Seven Kingdoms.
The first season dramatized the backstory of key figures in King Viserys' reign and the civil war that resulted from his unfulfilled succession plans, and other heartbreaking events.
