After two seasons on the air, MAX officially canceled the reboot of the youth series Pretty Little Liars.
The spinoff/reboot was acquired by the then-named HBO Max in late 2020.
The first season was titled Pretty Little Liars: Original Sinwhile the second, launched this year on the platform, was titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.
The series was directed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) y Lindsay Calhoon Bring as screenwriters and co-executive producers. I. Marlene Kingcreator of the original series, was credited as executive producer alongside Michael Grassi, Caroline Baron, Leslie Morgenstein, and Gina Girolamo.
In a statement to the press, Max's spokesperson said (via TVLine):
“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Pretty Little Liars, we are so grateful to our co-creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, as well as the team at Warner Bros. Television, for reintroducing fans to this fresh take on the Liars who band together to fight the latest chilling villain terrorizing Millwood. Their unique, modern creative vision, combined with the immense talent of our cast and crew, gave the series a fun, horror-filled point of view that paid homage to its original Rosewood roots.”
The second and now final season concluded last June on a cliffhanger.
The reboot told a new story, with new characters, and was more horror-oriented than the original series. Like the original series, the reboot was based on the book of the same name written by Sara Shepard.
SYNOPSIS:
“Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events nearly tore the working-class town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a disparate group of teenage girls—an all-new cast of Little Liars—find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and forced to pay for their parents’ secret sin committed two decades ago…as well as their own.
“In Original Sin, the dark, horror-tinged coming-of-age drama, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe, in a whole new town, with a new generation of Little Liars.”
The cast was made up of Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Mallory Becthel, Sharon Leal, Alex Aiono, Jordan Gonzalezy Elias Kacavas.
The original series aired seven seasons on ABC Family/Freeform (from 2010 to 2017). The series enjoyed high ratings, giving way to a spinoff titled Ravenswoodwhich only lasted one season on the air; at the end PLL In 2017, a second spinoff was launched, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionistswhich was also cancelled after airing one season from March to May 2019.
