Sarah Michelle Gellar is making it clear to the audience that will not return to new installment of the slasher I Know What You Did Last Summerwhich Sony Pictures launched in February 2023.

Many fans of the 1997 slasher speculated that Gellar could be reprising her role as Helen Shivers in the upcoming reboot, but the actress claims that is not the case, as her character has died.

In an interview with People, Gellar says:

“I'm dead.”

Gellar explained to People that she will be part of the film in an “unofficial” capacity.

But first, a little context.

The project is being handled as a “legacy sequel,” with the return of the original stars, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., Gellar's husband. The characters of both are survivors of the events of the original installment and the 1998 sequel.

The reboot will be led by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, Someone Great),with a new script co-written by Robinson and Sam Lansky. Previously there was a draft script written by Leah McKendrick.

Now, we move on to Gellar's statements.

my best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] He's going to direct it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is to provide continuity. So I'm always the one saying, 'Well, that would happen or that wouldn't happen with those characters,' so I have kind of an unofficial job title.”

Neal H. Moritzone of the producers of the original, is back to produce this new installment.

The cast of the previously announced reboot includes Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Sarah Pidgeon (The Wilds), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta) y Jonah Hauer-King (The Tattooist of Auschwitz).

A few weeks ago it was announced that Camila Mendes (Riverdale, Do Revenge), previously confirmed to assume the leading role, will no longer be the protagonist due to conflicts with her work schedule, as she has the filming of the live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, in which she will play Teela.

The original film directed by Jim Gillespie, is loosely inspired by the suspense novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The film written by by Kevin Williamson, It arrived in theaters shortly after the hit Scream (1996). After the box office success of the latter, Sony's Columbia Pictures bought the rights to the screenplay by Williamson (screenwriter of Scream and its sequels), taking advantage of the huge resurgence of the slasher genre in the mid-90s.

The plot of IKWYDLS focuses on a group of four friends, Julie (Hewitt), Ray (Prinze Jr.), Barry (Ryan Phillippe) and Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who, on American Independence Day and after celebrating their high school graduation, accidentally run over and kill a man fleeing the crime scene, after throwing the body to a lake. Nothing happens until a year later, when one of the group members, Julie, receives an anonymous message: “I know what they did last summer.” After the mysterious letter, a man dressed as a fisherman, with a dark raincoat and a hook instead of a hand, begins to attack them one by one, threatening to discover their secret. It had a global box office of $125.5 million with a budget of $17 million.

Sony Pictures will release the reboot under traditional release in theaters July 18, 2025.
