Netflix renews 'The Diplomat' for a third season

Looking ahead to the premiere of the second season on October 31, Netflix surprised by announcing the renewal of its original series, The Diplomatcreated by Debora Cahn and starring Keri Russell,

Filming is already underway in London and New York, according to Deadline reports.

The media shares Cahn's statements:

“Season 3 turns the chessboard on its head. “Kate lives the particular nightmare of getting what she wants.”

The six episodes that make up the second season will be available on the streamer starting October 31.

Russell interpreta a Kate Wyler, “an experienced foreign service officer who feels more at home in a crisis zone than in an upper-class environment.”

In the first season, Kate was set to take on her next assignment in Afghanistan before a change of plans sent her to London as the US ambassador to the UK. Out of her element in aristocratic England, Kate was forced to push her diplomatic skills to the limit as multiple wars put pressure on American foreign policy and, closer to home, competition brewed with her husband, Hal (played by Rufus Sewell).

“In this high-stakes political drama, the significance and torture of long-term relationships between countries and people take center stage,” according to the press release.

In season two, Kate will further investigate the attack in London and the earlier attack on a British aircraft carrier off the coast of Iran, which she now knows came from within the British government and not a foreign adversary. In her search, she faces a strained marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and a threatening visit from Grace Penn, the new vice president played by the Oscar and Emmy winner, Allison Janney (I Tonya, Mom, Masters of Sex, The Help), one of the new additions to the cast in the second season.

The rest of the cast is made up of Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh.

Russell, Cahn, Janice Williams, Peter Noah and Alex Graves are executive producers.
