After years of talks, Disney finally launched a third installment of the franchise in 2021 Sister Actdirected by Tim Federleand the screenwriter Madhuri Shekar (The Nevers, 3 Body Problem).
Sister Act 3 will feature the return of Whoopi Goldberg reprising her role as Deloris/sister Mary Clarence, in addition to producing the feature film alongside Tyler Perry and Tom Leonardis.
Maggie Smithwho played Mother Superior in Sister Act (1992) y Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), and was signed to reinterpret the role in the third installment, died on September 27 at the age of 89.
During a presentation at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonGoldberg assured the presenter, audience and viewers that Sister Act 3 remains in progress, although the script is currently being rewritten, due to Smith's death:
“We have to make some readjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith, as you know,” he explained. “And we will do it. We will do it. “It’s just a change.”
In the franchise titled Change of Habit in Our Market, Goldberg plays Deloris Van Cartier, a Las Vegas entertainer who poses as a nun after witnessing a mob attack. While at the convent, she helps the sisters recover from their troubled choir. In the second installment, Deloris returns to teach a music class full of marginalized young women (including Lauryn Hill, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Alanna Ubach).
