The film adaptation of the comic Red Sonjathat Millenium Films launched more than a decade ago, has traveled a long journey in its search to be released in cinemas.
Apparently, that path is finally reaching something concrete, at least in some markets, since Deadline reports that Signature Entertainment bought millennium average distribution rights for the United Kingdom and Irelandand will be released “Later this year.”
The reboot has been in postproduction for two years.
Millennium Media previously sold the distribution rights of multiple international markets, but premiere dates for them are not yet known.
The reboot is directed by M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane, Deathwatch, Ash vs. Evil) and starring Matilda Lutz (Revenge).
Based on the successful comic series, fantasy follows the hunter Barbara Red Sonja, who must unite a group of unlikely warriors to face the evil tyrant Emperor Draygan and his deadly wife, Dark Annisia.
In addition to Lutz, the cast includes Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Sheroes), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves), Luca Pasqualino (Snowpiercer), Rhona mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Martyn Ford (Final Score), Ben Radcliffe (Cuban Fury), Eliza wounds (Predestination), Verónica Ferres (Crisis), Phillip Winchester (Strike Back), y Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead).
The 1985 original film was starring Brigitte Nielsen.
