With the theatrical release of The Conjuring: Last Rites In September, the Conjuring Universe extended its domain as the highest grossing horror franchise of all time.

Last Ritesby the way, is the fourth installment of the main story of the horror saga, and the ninth installment taking into account the spinoffs.

Thus, the franchise New Line Cinema y Warner Bros. It is made up of multiple installments and several spinoffs with a combined global box office of more than $2.5 billion. And with the great commercial success of Last Rites –accumulating more than $480 million dollars per day at the global box office and is the highest-grossing installment of the saga– it seemed the most logical thing for the studios to continue making more paranormal projects.

Even so, WB is promoting the sequel titled in our region The Conjuring 4: Last Riteslike “The final chapter of the Ed and Lorraine Warren files”a strategy often used to attract audiences to theaters, moviegoers find it hard to believe that this is the final installment and conclusion of the franchise's main story. That is, it is the farewell to Patrick Wilson y Vera Farmiga as the demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, whom they have played since 2013, in the four installments of The Conjuringand the spinoff Annabelle Comes Home.

The director of Last rites, Michael Chavesmakes it clear: this is the end of The Conjuring. In an interview with ComicBook, the filmmaker confirms that the plans for it to be the final installment have not changed, despite the box office dominance:

“That's it. This is the final chapter… that's why we call it Last Rites. It's the last one. There are no other Conjuring movies. It is the end, without a doubt.”

And assuming that we will no longer have stories focused on Ed and Lorraine Warren – who after so much scare deserve to rest – there is vast material that the studio and the filmmakers can explore in future installments as a spinoff – as they have been Annabelle y The Nun– and even in other media.

The opportunity could be addressed on the small screen, with the television series that takes place at home in HBO Maxwhich in September announced the signing of Nancy Won as screenwriter, executive producer, and showrunner, and Peter Cameron y Cameron Squires as screenwriters.

Without details about the plot, it is known that the series “will continue the story established in the feature films.”

We also remember the statements made last April by the CCO of New Line, Richard Brener, who announced that Last Rites will score the end of “PHASE ONE” of the Universe of The Conjuring, without closing the door to the future:

“Although This is the last part of what we call Phase One, we are hopeful that we can do more. Phase Two is to be determined.”

This is the Global box office of The Conjuring Universe films from highest to lowest:

  • The Conjuring: Last Rites – $482.2 million dollars
  • The Nun – $366.1 million dollars
  • The Conjuring 2 – $321.4 million dollars
  • The Conjuring – $319.5 million dollars

Given that Last Rites had a production budget of $55 million dollarsit's a huge commercial success for WB.
