The last movie of Gremlins to hit theaters was the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), which reappointed Joe Dante as director and Columbus as screenwriter. 35 years have passed since the release of said film.

The original movie Gremlinsdirected by Joe Dante, told the story of a young man who receives as a gift from his father an adorable, furry creature, which he names Gizmo. The pet comes with three rules: keep it away from light, do not let it come into contact with water and do not feed it after midnight. Of course, all those rules are broken and chaos soon breaks out in the protagonist's small town, as not only do new Mogwais appear, led by the grumpy Stripe, but they also turn into murderous reptiles.

Columbus wrote the script for Gremlins (1984)based on an original idea of his own, with Spielberg as producer. Columbus did not participate in the sequel The New Batch.

The film was released in theaters the same weekend as Ghostbusters (1984), both becoming classics of the 80s, and an indelible part of 80s pop culture.

It's as twisted and dark as anything, so we'll see. It's always a conversation about the budget when we go to film it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a place I could easily turn to and start writing again, so I hope we see that movie soon.”

More recently, the HBO Max animated prequel series were created, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai (2022) y Gremlins: The Wild Batch (2024).

Jesse Ehrman, president of development and production at Warner Bros., stated in a press release about Gremlins 3:
