Los Screen Actors Guild Awardsbetter known as the SAG Awardsannounced a big change in their name.
Starting this year, the SAG Awards (or SAG Awards) will be called The Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA. The name in our region will be Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA. The change occurs after 30 years, since the presentation of the awards in 1995.
SAG-AFTRA and event organizers They point out that his statuette has always been called “The Actor”, so the change simply adapts the name of the show to match the official award. This also allows the union to fully recognize that it is now SAG-AFTRA following its merger in 2012, with the event also fully representing the 160,000 members of the merged unions who vote for the winners.
Additionally, it is believed that the new name will help the global audience quickly identify the nature of the prize being awarded.
In a press release, Jon Brockett, showrunner and executive producer of The Actor Awardsdeclared (via official site):
“From the beginning, our statuette has been called 'The Actor' and we are a show dedicated exclusively to actors, so This new name represents a perfect step forward in its evolution. The Actor's Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRA, allow viewers in more than 190 countries to immediately understand who we are and what we do”.
The Union's awards gala will not undergo any modification, neither in its presentation, nor in its administration in terms of voting, candidatures or eligibility requirements. The change is exclusive to the name of the award.
However, this year, while it is ongoing la campaña FYC: For Your Considerationand in order to facilitate the name transition for studio and network representatives, FYC campaign materials may continue to use “Screen Actors Guild Awards during this season's nominations voting period, which ends on January 5, 2026. After that date, and once the nominations are announced, SAG will recommend that everyone use “The Actor Awards.”
Past winners may continue to refer to their statuette as the SAG Award, but producers hope that eventually everyone will call it The Actor. Something similar happens with the Academy Award, which everyone knows as the Oscar, and not as its official name, the Academy Award.
Let's hope they have better luck than Bancomer/BBVA had in Mexico.
The SAG Awards aired on NBC from 1995 to 1997, but then moved to basic cable television for many years, where they aired on TNT and TBS. In 2023, they moved to Netflix, first through YouTube and then directly on the platform.
The awards ceremony has been held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in all but the first two editions. In 2021 there was no gala due to the pandemic. The show has had a hostless format for most of its history, but has featured four in its three decades of existence: Kristen Bell in 2018 and 2025, Megan Mullally in 2019, and Idris Elba in 2024.
SAG-AFTRA is the largest actors' union in the world, with 160,000 members.
The 32nd edition of the Actor Awards, presented by SAG-AFTRAwill announce the nominations he January 7, 2026 in film and television categories, while the awards gala will air live on Netflix on March 1st worldwide.
