'Zootopia 2' and 'Wicked: For Good' revive the box office with Thanksgiving feast

After a couple of very difficult months for the cinema, the arrivals of Zootopia 2 from Walt Disney Animation, and from Wicked: For Good from Universal Pictures, are injecting much-needed life into the box office.

Movie theaters are having a Thanksgiving Day feast, with Zootopia 2 having an opening day of $39.5 million at the US box officewhich almost led her to break the record for a release on Wednesday of the week of said celebration. Box office analysts project a debut weekend of more than $140 million domestically.

By the way, the figures consider the five days of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in the United States.

The achievements of the opening day of Zootopia 2 include:

• He second best opening in history for Wednesday of Thanksgiving weekonly behind another Disney hit, Moana 2 ($57.9 mdd).
• He third best opening day in history for a Walt Disney Animation Studios titlebehind Moana 2 ($57.9 mdd) y Frozen 2 ($42.2 mdd).

This same week, Zootopia 2 broke the record as the American animated film with the best opening day in China, with $34 million. In addition, it marked the best opening day for a Hollywood studio film since May 2021, and the tenth best opening day for a Hollywood production in all history.

To sustain the rhythm, Zootopia 2 would become the biggest studio film in China in 2025, in its opening weekend alone.

In Zootopia 2Detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde investigate a mysterious reptile, Gary De'Snake, who comes to town and causes chaos. To solve the case, they must go undercover to new parts of the city and their growing collaboration will be tested like never before. The plot takes place in Zootopia, a city where reptiles have been banned for decades, creating tensions and mistrust.

Besides, Wicked: For Good surpassed $200 million in the United States on Thanksgiving Day, after its premiere just seven days ago.

The sequel grossed $17.2 million on Wednesday, closing the day with a domestic box office total of $194.6 million, plus another $13 million on Thursday, Nov. 27, for a current total of $207.6 million.

It already broke numerous records in its global box office debut last weekend, including surpassing the first installment, Wicked (2024) as the best opening of all time for a Broadway musical adaptation.

Wicked: For Good is poised to take second place at the Thanksgiving box office, behind Zootopia 2with a projected collection of $93 million dollars in five days. This would bring its domestic total to more than $268.5 million as of Sunday.

We will know the final official figures during the course of Monday, December 1.

The sequel features the returns of Cynthia Erivo y Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Peter Dinklagey Marissa Bode.

Part 1 tells the story of how a green-skinned young woman is framed by the Wizard of Oz and becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.

The plot of the second part, covers a period years after Elphaba and Glinda's decision to separate. Elphaba, now an enemy of the state of Oz, has set out on a journey through the skies and forests of the west, while Glinda has become a public figure controlled by the Wizard (Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Yeoh).
