The reboot of Resident Evil from the screenwriter and director Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) and Sony Pictures, is triumphing in its theatrical run.

After eleven days in theaters, the horror project starring Austin Abrams (Weapons), surpassed $200 million at the global box office.

What's even better: the film is yet to be released in two extremely important international markets, China (October 5) and Japan (October 9). These two markets in particular have delivered great results for the franchise on previous occasions, so Cregger's proposal has the potential to become a success in these regions of Asia.

The box office up to date Resident Evil is as follows (as of Monday, September 28):

  • Domestic box office: $105.2 million dollars
  • International box office: $100 million dollars
  • Global box office: $205.2 million dollars

The production had a budget of $75 million dollars, and with a current worldwide box office collection 2.7 times the cost, it can already boast of being profitable for everyone involved.

The new version stars Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier for Lightfoot Medical Transport who travels through a zombie-infested Raccoon City, with intense action and terror, after a package delivery involves him in a fast-paced race for survival on a fateful night filled with chaos around him.

Here we share Cine3's four-star Resident Evil review.

Cregger wrote the script with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3, John Wick: Chapter 4) based on an original story by Cregger.

This is, by the way, a new collaboration between Abrams and Cregger, after the actor was part of the cast of the acclaimed horror film, the Oscar winner, Weapons.

As previously revealed, Cregger's vision for this film is different as portrayed in the seven live-action films (the six starring Milla Jovovich, and the 2021 reboot), and the short-lived Netflix series.

Since Sony announced the reboot with Cregger as co-writer and director, the filmmaker has been firm in his decision not to directly adapt the video game stories, stating that His film “is a completely original story that takes place in the world of Resident Evil”.

This isn't to say that the film wasn't inspired by its source material. Cregger said that he took this project as “A chance to be loyal to video games in spirit and toneand build a story that puts you in that scenario, again and again, with increasingly higher stakes”.

In addition to Abrams, the cast includes Paul Walter Hauser (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Zach Cherry (Severance), Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country), y Johnno Wilson (I Love That for You).
