The original HBO series, Girlsprepares his return to television.
A decade after airing its conclusion, HBO has given the green light to a five episode revival, in miniseries formatwith the return of its creator and protagonist, Lena Dunhamas well as the rest of the protagonists, Allison Williams, Jemima Church, Zosia Mamet y Andrew Rannells.
Who will not be back will be Adam Driver, who played Hannah's (Dunham) romantic partner in the series (via THR).
In a press release, Dunham stated:
“We always said we would only return to Girls if a specific story arose that we were burning with the desire to tell. I have missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn't visualize them today. Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me while I was taking a shower. And, as you may remember, once this quintet starts talking, it's very difficult to get them to shut up. It's not often you have the opportunity to revisit something that changed your life with the perspective that time brings and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding.. “I love these girls (and the guy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us why we do this: for the joy of being together… and for the opportunity to wear yellow mesh clothes.”
For now, plot details are being kept secret.
Dunham will executive produce the five-episode revival alongside Judd Apatow (who was also executive producer of the original series); Ilene S. Landress y Michael P. Cohen They are also listed as executive producers. Williams, Kirke, Mamet y Rannells They act as co-executive producers.
Jenni Konner, who co-created and executive produced alongside Dunham during the original run of Girls between 2012 and 2017, he does not participate in the revival. Dunham and Konner announced in 2018 that they were ending their collaboration as producers.
The production of Girls is scheduled to begin in 2027. HBO also released a video promoting the series' return; take a look at the end of the note.
The tragicomic series narrates the experiences, setbacks, love relationships and professional dilemmas of a group of four friends in their twenties who live in New York.
It all begins in the first episode when Hannah Horvath (Dunham), an aspiring writer who lives in Brooklyn, receives unexpected news from her parents (who live in Michigan): they decide to suddenly withdraw the financial support they had been giving her since she graduated from college two years ago. From that moment on, Hannah and her close circle must learn to survive on their own, facing the rawness, uncertainty and mistakes of young adult life.
Girls It was broadcast on HBO between 2012 and 2017, for 6 seasons and 62 episodes.
Throughout its seasons on air, Girls It generated a lot of debate, since critics, viewers and various commentators considered it a key work in deciphering the “millennial” generation.
Girls It won two Emmy Awards and earned 17 other nominations, including two for best comedy series. Both the series and Dunham won Golden Globes for the first season, and the production was also awarded by the writers' and directors' unions.
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president and head of comedy programming at HBO and HBO Max, said:
“We're excited to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of her 20s to the milestone of turning 40. To say the world has changed since we last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa and Elijah is an understatement, but we know fans—both old and new—will be happy to see how they've grown and relieved that they're still the same girls we knew long ago.”
