In November 2022, it was announced that Jason Blum y James Wan –two extremely important figures for the horror genre– were analyzing the possibility of merging their production companies, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. The plan was finally finalized in 2024 and two years later the name was made official.

The joint entity will be named Blumhouse Atomicaccording to Deadline reports.

The source explains that both Blum and Wan, will continue to operate as differentiated production labelseach with their own creative team in charge of film and television projects under their respective label.

THE MERGER PROVES TO BE A SUCCESS

Since the merger, Blumhouse and Atomic have jointly generated, more than $2.5 billion at the global box officecon combined production budgets of less than $330 million; includes more than $1 billion in global revenue in both 2025 and 2026.

This year's releases have grossed nearly $1.3 billion, with production budgets totaling less than $70 million. Among these critical and box office successes produced by the company are the horror hits Obsession by Curry Barker, and Backrooms by Kane Parsons, which became, respectively, the highest-grossing films in the history of their distributors: Focus Features and A24.

Prior to the merger, Blum and Wan had collaborated on some projects with great results.

Blum stated in a press release:

“When we merged our companies, we believed that the whole would be greater than the sum of its parts, and that is exactly what has happened. Blumhouse Atomic is the natural evolution of what we have built together. The franchise The Conjuring, Insidious, Saw. No filmmaker has created more horror franchises than James Wanand together we have brought together some of the most recognizable sagas of the genre under one roof. Return Saw James, with a new chapter on the way, is the perfect example of what we can achieve together. We have the production capacity of a large studio, but with the creative freedom and financial discipline of an independent company; Additionally, we have more opportunities than ever to take these stories beyond movie theaters, expanding them into television, video games and live experiences.”

Wan added:

“The future of horror comes from new voices, and Blumhouse Atomic gives us more ways to find them and support them in the long term. I started with a small film and people willing to bet on it, so, Creating those same opportunities for others is personal to me.. Working with filmmakers like Kane Parsons, Curry Barker, Josh Giuliano and Dylan Clark is a key part of that. “We want to give them the freedom to create something distinctive and build relationships that last beyond a single film.”

Blumhouse Atomic hired Sam Zimmerman —from Shudder— as Senior Vice President of Development and Acquisitions, with the aim of discovering emerging filmmakers and producing films with budgets of less than $5 million dollars.

Zimmerman was involved in arranging for Universal Pictures to acquire the upcoming slasher film, River —originally from IFC— for more than $10 million during the last Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), after having previously worked with its director, Joshua Guiliano. Likewise, at the end of 2025, Blumhouse Atomic formalized a “first option” agreement with the production company Divide/Conquer to develop high-concept, low-cost genre films. Within the framework of this alliance, Blumhouse Atomic acquired the rights to the franchise Sawwhich marks Wan's reunion with the horror saga that he co-created with Leigh Whannell. For its part, Lionsgate maintains current ownership and distribution rights, while Content Partners and Mark Burg retain interests in the existing film catalog. Blum and Wan are also working on new installments of Paranormal Activity y Blair Witch.

Some of the film projects that Blumhouse Atomic is preparing for 2027 include: River, The Revenge of La Llorona, The Exorcist: Martyrs, Anything But Ghosts, Paranormal Activity, Molepeople, Blair Witch, Sleepover y Seasons.
