Hungarian Slices are great for your morning and afternoon coffee. Check out the step-by-step instructions and use the ingredients below.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of wheat flour

  • 1 package (10g) of dry yeast

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 1 cup of warm milk

  • 1/2 cup melted butter

  • 2 egg yolks

  • 1 cup of sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of cinnamon powder

  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or almonds (optional)

  • 1/2 cup apricot jam or other flavor of your choice for brushing

Directions

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, yeast, sugar and salt.
  • In a pan, heat the milk until it is lukewarm. Add the melted butter and egg yolks. Mix well.
  • Pour the liquid mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-10 minutes, or until it is elastic and does not stick to your hands.
  • Cover the dough and let it rest for approximately 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  • While the dough rests, prepare the filling by mixing the sugar, cinnamon and chopped walnuts or almonds.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • After resting time, roll out the dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface.
  • Spread the filling evenly over the dough.
  • Roll the dough from one of the longer sides, forming a roll.
  • Cut the roll into slices about 2 cm thick.
  • Place the slices on a greased baking tray or lined with parchment paper, leaving space between them.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the slices are golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and, while they are still hot, brush the slices with apricot jam to give them a shine.
  • Let cool before serving.
