“Two branches, one tree.”
Under that premise, Sony Pictures reveals the first trailer of Karate Kid: Legendsthe new installment of the franchise Karate Kidthat one has Ralph Macchio in his return as Daniel LaRusso already Jackie Chanreprising his role as Mr. Han from the 2010 remake.
- Macchio played Daniel LaRusso in the original film, The Karate Kid(1984), and the two sequels in 1986 and 1989. He also took it up again in the series Cobra Kai.
LaRusso and Han team up to teach martial arts and share wisdom with a new student named Li Fong, played by the young actor. Ben Wang (American Born Chinese), who becomes his new protégé.
Wang was chosen after Chan and Macchio announced a global search in which thousands of young actors from around the world applied for the role. Wang was chosen in part for his variety of martial arts skills, including karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, kempo and taekwondo.
Ming-Na Wen (Mulan, Agents of SHIELD, The Mandalorian) plays Li Fong's mother. Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek, Doctor Odyssey, Dr. Death), Sadie Stanley (Cruel Summer), y Shaunette Renée Wilson (The Resident) complete the cast.
Jonathan Entwistle (I’m Not Okay With This, The End of the F***ing World) directs the feature film written by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit).
He coming-of-age will continue the mythology of the original franchise.
The new installment will bring the story to the East Coast and will focus on a teenager from China (Wang) who finds strength and direction through martial arts and a tough but wise mentor (or two).
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
“When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition, but his skills alone are not enough. Li's kung fu teacher, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), recruits the original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) to help him, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.”
In an interview with EW, the director of LegendsEntwistle revealed how the film combines the universes of the Miyagiverse and the 2010 reboot:
“Without giving too much away, I can say that Mr. Han and Mr. Miyagi are the connection to Daniel. The Han family and the Miyagi family are connected since ancient times. And there is a mention of this within the Karate Kid movie canon for those people who want to look for it.”
Karen Rosenfelt (Dopesick, Me Before Yousaga Twilight) produces the feature film.
Sony Pictures will release Karate Kid: Legends on May 30, 2025.
