In addition to Pegula and Anisimova, the US had another tennis player in the top eight at the Australian Open: Coco Gauff (3rd), who was surprised by Ukrainian Elena Svitolina (12th) in the quarterfinals.

In six previous appearances in Melbourne, Pegula's best result was the quarterfinals, achieved in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Two years ago, Pegula fell in the second round and, in 2025, in the third.

Pegula desafia Rybakina

Runner-up at the 2024 US Open, the American is looking for the second Grand Slam decision in her career. And to get there, you will have to overcome, on Thursday (28), around 7am (Brasília time), the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (5th), who defeated the runner-up in the ranking, the Polish Iga Swiatek.

And the direct confrontation is tied between the two semifinalists, with three wins each. The tennis player from Kazakhstan won her last duel, in the semifinals of the WTA Finals, in October, also on the fast court.

Whoever advances decides, on Saturday, the title against Svitolina or the leader of the ranking, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (champion in 2023 and 2024 and current runner-up).

How was the victory?

This Wednesday, Pegula needed just 30 minutes to win the first set. The second was much more balanced, and Anisimova opened 5/3. In the tiebreak, however, the experienced American prevailed and secured an unprecedented feat in Melbourne.
