Ingredients
2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons wheat flour
2 cups of milk
salt to taste
pepper to taste
Nutmeg to taste (optional)
Directions
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat until completely melted.
- Add the wheat flour to the pan and stir well, forming a paste called “roux”.
Cook the roux for about 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, so the flour cooks a little and doesn’t taste raw. - Gradually add the milk to the pan, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
Continue adding the milk until all of it has been incorporated into the roux. - Increase the heat to medium and continue stirring the sauce until it thickens.
This can take 5-10 minutes.
The sauce should be creamy enough to coat the back of a spoon. - Season the white sauce with salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste.
Nutmeg is optional, but can add extra flavor to the sauce. - Remove the white sauce from the heat and it is ready to be used in your recipes.
You can use it in pasta, lasagna, gratins, among other dishes.
Notes
- Remember that you can adjust the consistency of the sauce by adding more milk if you want a thinner sauce, or letting it thicken further if you prefer a thicker consistency. Enjoy your creamy white sauce!
