At the beginning of the month, Universal Pictures pleasantly surprised the audience by announcing plans to resurrect The mummy with a new movie.

The fourth installment of one of its most popular franchises, was launched with the return of the original protagonists, Brendan Fraser y Rachel Weiszreprising their roles from the 1999 films and the 2001 sequel.

However, it is not until now that we know from one of them's own voice that the plans are a fact.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Fraser, who after becoming a 90s movie star with films like Encino Man, With Honors, Airheads, George of the Jungley The Mummymade a triumphant return in 2022 with the drama The Whale by Darren Aronofsky, who won him the Oscar for best actor, spoke with the media about the return of the franchise The mummywith the film he calls the one he wanted to make.

The actor told the AP:

“The one I wanted to do was never made. The third was a mock-up of… how do I say this to the AP reporter? NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year. So they put two together and went to China. Working in Shanghai was an incredible experience.”

“I'm proud of the third one because I think it's a good independent film. We took it back, did what we usually do with a different team and gave it our best. But the one I wanted to do is yet to come. And I've been waiting for this call for 20 years. Sometimes it was a clear sign, sometimes a weak clue. Now? It's time to give the fans what they want”.

At the moment there are no details of the plot of the new The Mummy.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin y Tyler Gillett of Radio Silencewill direct the film from a script by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan, The Deliverance).

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett directed Ready or Not (2019), Scream (2022), Scream VI (2023), Abigail (2024), and they have the sequel in post-production Ready or Not: Here I Comescheduled for release in theaters on April 10, 2026.

Fraser and Weisz co-starred in two films The Mummy, The Mummy (1999) y The Mummy Returns (2001), based on one of Universal's most historic IPs, dating back to the early 20th century. Both installments were directed by Stephen Sommers.

In the 1999 film, Fraser played Rick O'Connell, an American adventurer and former soldier in the French Foreign Legion, and Weisz played Evelyn Carnahan, an English Egyptologist working at the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo. Over the course of the two films, the couple goes from reluctant partners to a marriage with a young son, battling ancient curses, such as that of the resurrected Egyptian high priest Imhotep. Weisz's character Evelyn dies in the second film after discovering that she is the reincarnation of an Egyptian princess, although Rick eventually revives her.

The two films have a combined global box office gross of more than $400 million.

Later, in 2002, the spinoff was launched The Scorpion Kingstarring Dwayne Johnson. While in 2008, the studio released a third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperorwith the return of Fraser and the absence of Weisz. Her role as Evelyn was played by Maria Bello. At the time, there were conflicting accounts as to why Weisz didn't return for a third film.

In 2017, Universal attempted to revive the franchise with the release of the reboot The Mummy from director Alex Kurtzman, starring Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis and Sofia Boutella. The studio's plan was to launch the Dark Universean interconnected universe of monsters, which was ruled out after the failure of the reboot of The mummyalthough… it accumulated a global box office of $403 million dollars, however it was destroyed by critics and the audience.
