Sony Pictures has a new installment of the slasher in the works since February 2023 I Know What You Did Last Summerwhich a few weeks ago announced it was negotiating with Camila Mendes (Riverdale, Do Revenge) to take on the leading role.

The latest news confirms that Mendes will no longer star in the reboot due to conflicts with his work schedule. Deadline reveals that the actress was unable to fit in her commitments because she has the filming of the live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, in which she will play Teela.

Mendes landed her breakout role as Veronica on The CW's teen series, Riverdalewhich aired for seven seasons from 2017 to 2023. The actress has also been part of feature films such as Palm Springs Hulu, Do Revenge from Netflix, and has collaborated with Amazon MGM Studios on Upgraded y Music.

As previously published, the reboot of the original 1997 installment is in talks with Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Sarah Pidgeon (The Wilds), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta) y Jonah Hauer-King (The Tattooist of Auschwitz) to form the main cast.

The project would be a “legacy sequel”, with the potential return of the original stars, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who are also in talks to star in the reboot.

The reboot will be led by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, Someone Great), and a new script co-written by Robinson and Sam Lansky. Previously there was a script written by Leah McKendrick.

Neal H. Moritzone of the producers of the original, is back to produce this new installment.

Sony Pictures will release the film in traditional theaters July 18, 2025.

The original film directed by Jim Gillespie, is loosely inspired by the thriller novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The film written by Kevin Williamson, It hit theaters shortly after the hit Scream (1996). Following the box office success of the latter, Sony's Columbia Pictures bought the rights to Williamson's script (screenwriter of Scream and its sequels), taking advantage of the huge resurgence of the slasher genre in the mid-90s.

And this time the strategy is repeated, since Robinson and McKendrick are said to have been inspired by the revival of the saga Screamwhich in 2022 released the fifth installment, the following year was launched Scream VIand they are currently developing Scream VII.

The plot of IKWYDLS focuses on a group of four friends, Julie (Hewitt), Ray (Prinze Jr..), Barry (Ryan Phillippe) and Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who, on Independence Day and after celebrating their high school graduation, accidentally run over and kill a man fleeing the scene of the crime, after dumping the body in a lake. Nothing happens until a year later, when one of the members of the group, Julie, receives an anonymous message: “I know what you did last summer.” After the mysterious letter, a man dressed as a fisherman, with a dark trench coat and a hook instead of a hand, begins to attack them one by one, threatening to reveal their secret. It had a global box office of $125.5 million on a budget of $17 million.

The studio later released the sequels I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) with the return of Hewitt and Prinze, and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), with a new cast. More recently, Prime Video made a series based on the original film, which was cancelled after airing one season.
