Tom Ford is back in the world of cinema.
The fashion designer and filmmaker is already clear about what his next project for the big screen will be; is titled Cry to Heaven. It is about an adaptation of the novel of the same name of Anne Rice.
The script was written by Ford, who will also direct and produce with his company Fade to Black, Deadline reported.
This will be his third feature film as a director, and his first in a decade. His last feature film was the acclaimed thriller Nocturnal Animals (2016), starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal.
The versatile artist has assembled a stellar cast to star Cry Heavenwhich includes Nicholas Hoult (Nosferatu), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals), the singer Adele In his film debut, Ciarán Hinds (Belfast), George MacKay (1917), Mark Strong (1917), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Paul Bettany (WandaVision), Owen Cooper (Adolescence), Daniel Quinn-Toye, Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Josephine Thiesen (The Empress), Thank you Newton (Westworld), Theodore Pellerin (Becoming Karl Lagerfeld), Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters), Cassian Bilton (Foundation), Hauk Hannemann (Like me) y Lux Pascal (The pack).
The plot is set in 18th century Italy.
The project is currently in pre-production in London and Rome, while the filming this planned to start mid-January 2026. It is expected that the premiere happen during the fall –from the northern hemisphere– from 2026.
Rice's original novel tells the stories of two unexpected collaborators: a Venetian nobleman and a castrated singer from Calabria, both with aspirations of success in the world of opera.
The plot addresses themes such as identity, betrayal, love and the search for artistic and personal freedom, ideas that Ford masters perfectly. He has already explored these themes in his film work and in the world of fashion, the medium reminds us.
The filmmaker has been thinking about this as his next project since last year, however he was ensuring he had the right pieces of the cast before announcing it.
After starting conversations with different studios, Ford decided to self-finance the film and shoot it his own way. The plans to market it – achieve distribution – will be refined once production is completed.
The former creative director of Gucci and YSL sold his Tom Ford fashion brand to The Estée Lauder Companies for $2.8 billion in 2023.
Ford directed his debut filmA Single Man (2009), premiered in the official section of the 2009 Venice Film Festival. It earned an Oscar nomination, a BAFTA Award, as well as the AFI Award for Best Film of the Year and the GLAAD Award for Best Film.
Then came his second feature film, Nocturnal Animals (2016), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, and received nine BAFTA nominations, three Golden Globe nominations – with Aaron Taylor-Johnson winning Best Supporting Actor – and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Michael Shannon.
Cry Heaven reunites him with Taylor-Johnson, and Firth, members of the cast of Nocturnal Animals y A Single Manrespectively.
