The movie classic Dirty Dancingfrom Lionsgate, is preparing a musical adaptation for Broadway, Variety reported.
The musical work will be titled Dirty Dancing: The Musical, with premiere planned for the end of 2025. The plans are to have staging it on Broadway, as well as taking it to other cities in the United States. Later, the producers want to take the show to markets in Asia, Australia, and Latin America.among others.
The work is being developed by Eleanor Bergsteinthe screenwriter of the original film. He also writes a book about the musical.
Lonny Pricewho played Neil Kellerman in the original installment, will direct the musical production. Price has been nominated for a Tony for A Class Act y 110 in the Shade.
The upcoming theater production is expected to include new music and novel choreography.
The press release advances:
“It will deliver iconic moments, unforgettable songs and electrifying dance sequences, while reinventing key elements of the story so they resonate with today's theater audiences.”
Dirty Dancingfrom 1987, starred Jennifer Gray as Frances “Baby” Houseman, a young woman who falls in love with dance instructor Jonny Castle (Patrick Swayze) at a resort in the Catskills, New York, during the summer of 1963.
The film grossed $214 million at the box office, while the musical number “(I've Had) The Time of My Life” won the Oscar for best original song. The film also introduced the phrase “nothing puts Baby in the corner” to pop culture.
Bergstein said in a statement:
“Now that we have come full circle and with my old friend Lonny Price by my side, I return to the stage with a reimagined version. Their hope is to live up to the new world that revolves around us and, at the same time, more completely and accurately revise the story I wanted to tell when I wrote my first lines. It's my way of saying thank you to all of you.”
Price added that it will offer a deeper version of the characters familiar to audiences around the world:
“Having played Neil in the film, I know how many people have been moved by this story, and for me to return to Kellerman and direct this new musical version is really exciting.”
In 1988, CBS aired the series Dirty Dancingwhich works as a continuation of the film with a new cast. The prequel was released in 2004. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nightsstarring Diego Luna and Romola Garai, while in 2017 a made-for-TV remake headed by Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes was released. In 2004 the staging took place Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage.
