Last May marked ten years since the release in cinemas of the science fiction film Edge of Tomorrow from the director Doug LimanThe film that did not do particularly well at the box office when it was released in cinemas around the world, has had time as its best ally, as it has been over time that it has become one of the favorite installments of the science fiction genre and of its protagonist, Tom Cruise.
Warner Bros. has been toying with the idea of a sequel for years. In 2016, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse were hired to write a script; in 2017, Liman talked about it being a prequel with a wonderful story, and finally in 2019, Matthew Robinson was hired to write a new script with Liman.
In an interview with Empire Magazine to promote his latest film, The Instigators, Liman confirmed that plans for a sequel are still in the works with Cruise:
“No, we still talk about it. We love that world. I don’t know how long it took Cameron with his Terminators, but at the time it seemed like a long time.”
“Tom and I saw her again [Edge of Tomorrow] “I watched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years. I thought, ‘Wow, that’s a really good movie. ’”
“I haven't always necessarily had the good fortune to have films with big opening weekends,” he admits.Bourne Identity lost to Scooby-Doo [en] their first weekend. And Swingers “It went unnoticed by the theaters. What I’ve come to understand is, I’m making movies for the long haul. I’m an ego-driven guy, I’d like to get praise now. But I also recognize that, given the choice, I would choose to make movies that people 50 years from now will still be watching.”
Edge of Tomorrow Set in the not-too-distant future where Earth has been attacked by aliens, the film follows Major William Cage (Cruise), a cowardly officer who has never seen combat, who is given a near-suicidal mission. There, he finds himself in a time loop where he is forced to relive the same day, and fight and die over and over again. After enlisting the help of a female soldier (played by Emily Blunt), the multiple battles make him increasingly skilled and effective in his fight against the aliens and their plan to escape.
The film, which is an adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's 2004 manga and novel called All You Need Is Killdid not perform spectacularly at the box office ($100 million at the domestic box office, $270 million at the international box office). However, it is a good and entertaining feature film that was liked by many audiences and critics in general.
