Former California quintet Dummy was born in the late 2010s (sort of) from the ashes of shoegazers/dream poppers Wildhoney, and as I said when I wrote about the band's first recordsthey added to this love for distortions and dreams a huge influence of Stereolab and everything it represents.

Today, almost exactly two years later, I'm back here to talk a little about the latest work by group-that-carries-the-name-of-an-essential-disc, Free energyreleased in September via Trouble in My Mind and since then one of the house favorites in 2024.

From the moment you press play on “Intro-UB”, which opens the doors to “Soonish”, “Unshaped road” and so on, two things become clear: firstly, the quartet continues to have Stereolab as its main reference; secondly, he is much more willing to use electronics – mainly in the form of synthesizers and some shaking beats – and this addition, which could unbalance Dummy's formula, only enhances its psychedelic effects.

Kraut trance, distorted guitars and 'those' vocal harmonies now mix with electronic ambiences and beats inherited from both the Madchester era and big beat/trip hop. If this mixture tickles your senses, dive deep into Free energy and maybe it will also become one of your favorite albums of the year.

Bon voyage!
