HBO has given the green light to development of a television series of V for Vendetta.

Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy, The Death of Bunny Munro) will write the script for the small screen adaptation, with James Gunn and DC Studios' Peter Safran serving as executive producers, Variety reported.

Ben Stephenson and Leanne Klein will also executive produce. Warner Bros. Television will produce.

V for Vendetta began as a comic series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, which debuted in the 1982 British anthology Warriory DC Comics he took over its publication in 1988.

The story takes place in a dystopian Britain.in a not too distant futurewhere the country is controlled by the fascist party Norsefire. An anarchist named V, known for his distinctive Guy Fawkes mask, seeks to overthrow the government with the help of Evey Hammond, a young woman he rescued from the country's secret police.

The comic was made into a film in 2005, with the film directed by James McTeigue, starring Hugo Weaving like V, and Natalie Portman Like Evey. The Wachowski sisters wrote the script at that time. The film was praised by critics and audiences, amassing a global box office of more than $130 million. For movie buffs, it is tradition to see it again every November 5. Warner Bros. will re-release it in theaters in November 2026, as part of the 20th anniversary of its original release.

If the series gets the green light for a full season, it would become the latest DC Comics property to find its home on HBO. The premium channel and its streamer, HBO Max, are the home of the Emmy winner, The Penguinand the acclaimed miniseries Watchmen 2019. In 2026 the first season of Lanterswith Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in leading roles.
