HOTD sets its plot in Westeros, 200 years before the events portrayed in GoT before the fall of the Throne, exploring the beginning and end of House Targaryen after the unification of the Seven Kingdoms.
The first season dramatized the backstory of key characters in King Viserys's reign and the civil war that resulted from his disrespected succession plans, and other heartbreaking events.
The second season, which ended in August 2024, picks up the story immediately after the death of Lucerys Velaryon, son of Rhaenyra, at the hands of Aemond Targaryen. The season focused on the escalation of the conflict, taking the plot from a cold war to the bloody civil war widely known as the Dance of the Dragons.
The cast of HOTD includes Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Jacob Saban, Jefferson Hall y Matthew Needham.
Some of the new additions for season three include Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy, Gladiator) interpreting the Ser Roderick Dustina northern warlord who leads a large contingent of veteran soldiers known as the Winter Wolves into the Battle of the Dance of Dragons, to support Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's claim; Dan Fogler (A Complete Unknown, saga Fantastic Beasts) as See Torrhen Manderly; y James Norton as Ormund Hightower. In George R. R's books, Martin, Dustin and Hightower face each other on opposite sides. Dustin is also known as “Ruin Roddy.”
Previously, Francesca Orsi, director of Drama Series and Movies at HBO, revealed that the long-awaited Battle of the Gorge will be the starting engine for the third season of the dragon house.
The eighth and final episode of the second season, “The Queen Who Ever Was”left the table set for the third season to start with the iconic and bloody Battle of the Gullet, a very important story from the book Fire & Blood by Martin.
