Check out the step-by-step instructions for making your heart of palm pie amazing! The ingredients you’ll need are:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of wheat flour

  • 1/2 cup cold butter or margarine, cubed

  • 1 egg

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 4 tablespoons of ice water

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves of minced garlic

  • 1 can of chopped hearts of palm

  • 1 chopped tomato

  • 1/2 cup chopped chives (parsley and chives)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 cup of milk

  • 2 tablespoons of wheat flour

Directions

  • In a bowl, mix the wheat flour with the cold butter and salt until it forms a crumbly mixture .
  • Add the egg and ice water, mixing until you get a smooth dough. If necessary, add more water little by little.
  • Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • In a pan, heat the olive oil and sauté the onion and garlic until golden.
  • Add the chopped hearts of palm and tomato, sautéing for a few more minutes.
  • Season with salt, pepper and add the parsley. Set aside.
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • Divide the dough into two parts and roll one of them out on a floured surface until you have a disc that covers the bottom and sides of a pie pan.
  • Place the filling on the rolled out dough.
  • On another floured surface, roll out the second piece of dough and cover the pie, sealing the edges.
  • Make a few shallow cuts in the top so that steam can escape during cooking.
  • Brush the surface of the pie with a little egg yolk, if desired.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for approximately 40 minutes, or until the dough is golden.
  • Remove from the oven and let the pie cool slightly before cutting and serving.
