The new installment of the slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer will not apply a “to the Halloween 2018”.

What are we referring to? The reboot launched by Sony Pictures in 2023, led by the director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, Someone Great) will not ignore the events of the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summeras it did Halloween from 2018 that served as a reboot and direct sequel to the original 1978 installment, ignoring the rest of the installments in that franchise.

In recent days, reports have emerged indicating that the próxima I Know What You Did Last Summer It would only be a sequel to the original 1997 release, but not to the 1998 sequel, something that was quickly denied by the director herself.

In a post on X/Twitter, Robinson clarified in response to one of those rumors:

“Definitely not [es cierto]. ISKWYDLS is canon. Hope this helps.”

After the director's clarification, the fandom began to call for the return of Brandy, one of the survivors of ISKWYDLS.

In 2006, another sequel was released, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summerwhich did not feature the return of any of the survivors of the original and also failed to make any headlines. The first film was a huge box office success, grossing $125.5 million worldwide on a $17 million budget.

More recently, Prime Video made a series based on the original film, which was cancelled after one season.

The legacy reboot/sequel is negotiating with Camila Mendes (Riverdale, Do Revenge) y Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) to sign them in leading roles, in addition to holding talks with Sarah Pidgeon (The WildsBroadway play, Stereophonic), Tyriq Withers (Him, Atlanta) y Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid, The Tattooist of Auschwitz).

The studio is also looking for the return of the original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.

In recent days it was revealed that there is a new script written by director Robinson and Sam Lansky. Previously there was a script written by Leah McKendrick.

The original film directed by Jim Gillespie, is loosely inspired by the thriller novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The film written by Kevin Williamson, It hit theaters shortly after the hit Scream (1996). Following the box office success of the latter, Sony's Columbia Pictures bought the rights to Williamson's script (screenwriter of Scream and its sequels), taking advantage of the huge resurgence of the slasher genre in the mid-90s.

And this time the strategy is repeated. Robinson was inspired by the revival of the saga Screamwhich in 2022 released the fifth installment, the following year was launched Scream VIand they are currently developing Scream VII.

The plot of I Know What You Did Last Summer focuses on a group of four friends, Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Barry (Ryan Phillippe) y Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who, on American Independence Day and after celebrating their high school graduation, accidentally run over and kill a man fleeing the scene of the crime, after throwing the body into a lake. Nothing happens until a year later, when one of the members of the group, Julie, receives an anonymous message: “I know what you did last summer.” After the mysterious letter, a man dressed as a fisherman, with a dark trench coat and a hook instead of a hand, begins to attack them one by one, threatening to reveal their secret.

Neal H. Moritzone of the producers of the original, back as a producer.

Sony Pictures will release the film in traditional theaters July 18, 2025.
