In November 2023, the saga Scream was involved in controversy, after the dismissal of Melissa Barrera from Scream 7following comments deemed anti-Semitic by the production company Spyglass Media Group.
The next day it was revealed that Jenna Ortega had left Scream 7 due to scheduling conflicts with the filming of the series Wednesday from Netflix. A few weeks later, Christopher Landon announced that he had abandoned his duties as director of the film, as the dream had become a “nightmare.”
Ortega finally addresses the controversy in an interview with Vanity Fair, where the outlet asked him about his support for Palestine amid the Gaza conflict:
“The industry we work in is very sensitive. Everyone wants to be politically correct, but I feel like in doing so we lose a lot of our humanity and integrity because we lack honesty.”
The actress continued:
“I wish we had a better sense of conversation. Imagine if everyone could say what they feel and not be judged for it, and if anything, generate some kind of debate, not an argument. Am I describing world peace?”
Following the departures of Barrera and Ortega, Scream VII rewrote the script, hired a new director, and brought back Neve Campbell to reprise her iconic role as Sidney Prescott after the actress opted not to return for the most recent installment, Scream 6due to a pay dispute with Spyglass.
