In recent days during the Marvel Studios presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Kevin Feige revealed the return of Robert Downey Jr. al MCUThis time he won't be reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but rather playing the villain Doctor Doom in the next two installments of Avengers, Avengers: Doomsday y Avengers: Secret Warswhich will be directed by the Russo Brothers.

The news generated all kinds of reactions on social media, and even among RDJ's friends and colleagues, specifically Jeremy Rennerwho told US Weekly in recent days that the announcement took him by complete surprise.

Renner, who plays Hawkeye in the MCU, is considered a close friend of Downey's, but the actor noted that Downey did not let him or any of the original Avengers cast (Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth) know of his plans to return to the MCU as Doctor Doom:

“No! I had no idea. The motherf**ker didn’t say anything to me. We’re good friends. There’s the Avengers family chat. The original six. He didn’t say a peep. I went online and started talking on the phone like, ‘What’s going on? Have you been keeping this from us the whole time? ’ It’s exciting news. I’m really, really excited about it.”

Renner's most recent appearance in the MCU was the series Hawkeye from Disney+, and the actor does not intend for this to be his last:

“You’ve got Downey back and the Russo brothers. Marvel is going to have a great future in this direction. The Avengers movies have always been fan favorites and there are so many wonderful characters in them. It’s going to be a challenge to get everyone together, but I’m excited. We’ll see. I think we’ll probably do it. It’s all new. They just made the announcement. They have to start thinking about how to do it.”
