One of the film proposals of the year that is emerging as a contender for the Oscar, has just revealed its official trailer.
We talk about Hamnet, a lyrical adaptation of the famous novel of Maggie O'Farrellwhere the loss of a mother becomes fertile ground for art.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhaois the director and co-writer of this story of love and loss that inspired the masterpiece of William Shakespeare, Hamlet.
Zhao co-wrote the script with O'Farrell, taking what she calls an “adult fairy tale” approach, prioritizing emotional truth over historical accuracy.
The cast is headed by Jessie Buckley (MEN, Wicked Little Letters) interpreting the Agnes Shakespearewho deals with the heartbreaking death of his son Hamnetwhile Paul Mescal (Gladiator II, Aftersun) plays her husband William Shakespeare.
The cast also includes Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist) como Bartholomew, Emily Watson (Dune: Prophecy) like Mary, Jacobi Skirt (Before) as Hamnet, Noah Skirt (A Quiet Place) like Hamlet, Jack Shalloo (Blitz), y David Wilmot (Station Eleven), among others.
SYNOPSIS:
“The story of Agnes, William Shakespeare's wife, as she struggles to overcome the loss of her only son.”
The director describes working with Buckley and Mescal as an alchemy: “They gave a lot to each other”Zhao previously told Vanity Fair.
To make the production possible, an intricate replica, at approximately 70% scale, of William Shakespeare's Globe theater from around 1600 was built.
The composer's soundtrack Max Richter It was essential to unravel the emotional climax of the film, where audible crying filled the silence of the theater, according to Zhao, in statements to the same medium.
The producers of the feature film are Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes, Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, and Nicolas Gonda. Executive producers are Zhao, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Laurie Borg.
At the end of August, Hamnet celebrated its world premiere in Telluride, and a week later visited the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF 2025) where it won the People's Choice Award.
Focus Features will release it in US theaters on November 27, 2025followed by a wider release on December 12.
