Sony Pictures launched a new trilogy that will follow the events of 28 Days Later y 28 Weeks Laterwith the return of Danny Boyle as director and Alex Garland as a screenwriter.
The first of these three new deliveries is 28 Years Laterwhich since its announcement became one of the most anticipated films of 2025.
With a cast that includes Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu, Kraven the Hunter), Ralph Fiennes (The Menu, Harry Potter), y Jack O’Connell (Back to Black, Unbroken), Alfie Williams (His Dark Materials), the studio continues to prepare the audience for the release of 28 Years Later in theaters, sharing a new look at Comer.
In this sequel, Comer plays Isla, who, along with Jamie (Taylor-Johnson), is raising her son Spike (Williams), a child who never knew the world before the rise of the infected.
The Empire Magazine medium reveals the glimpse of Comer, who in an interview tells the medium the following:
“Spike is a true beacon of light for her.”
And about stunt doubles playing zombies:
“The thing about our specialists who play the infected is that they don't really slow you down. They chase you. “There were so many moments where I felt like I was really running for my life!”
“[Danny] Boyle just said, 'I love this,'” Comer recalls. “I said, 'Why?' 'Because you just have to go there. You can't pretend. You have to really go there so that the audience is with you.'”
The second installment of this trilogy has already been filmed. Boyle directs 28 Years Laterwhile Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) is the director of the second. Garland writes the screenplay for all three films with Boyle returning as director for the third as well.
About the return of Cillian Murphy, In recent days, producer Andrew Macdonald revealed that he will not be reprising his role as Jim from the original installment. 28 Years LaterHowever, they do not rule out that Murphy could return for one or two subsequent installments. The Oscar winner for Oppenheimer is one of the executive producers.
In the original movie, 28 Days Later (2002), Jim awakens from a coma after a bicycle accident, and discovers that England is now a desolate, post-apocalyptic meltdown, thanks to a virus that turned its victims into raging killers.

“It has been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a bioweapons laboratory and now, even in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist among the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission to the dark heart of the continent, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected, but other survivors as well.
Filming concluded principal photography in August 2024, having been filmed primarily on Holy Island, an island off the coast of northeast England. Boyle used a iPhone 15 Pro Max model for filming.
The sequel has a budget of $75 million, making it the largest film project to be shot using a Smartphone.
Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later) is the director of photography.
Boyle and Garland produce the feature alongside the original's producer Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew, with Murphy serving as executive producer.
In addition to becoming a commercial hit, the original 2002 film injected new life into the zombie subgenre, introducing a new form of undead, moving away from those slow walkers, now being ferocious and fast. He also analyzed the fragile nature of society in these pandemic scenarios, which would later be analyzed in other films such as Zombieland, World War Zand the series The Walking Deadamong others.
Sony Pictures set the theatrical release of 28 Years Later for him June 20, 2025.
