'Joker: Folie à Deux' receives R Rating

Waiting for the first trailer of the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, that Warner Bros. will release next week, the official classification of the director's film is announced Todd Phillipsmade by Joaquin Phoenix in his return as Joker, and Lady Gaga like Harley Quinn.

According to reports from FilmRatings, the Film Association (MPA; Motion Picture Association) the organization in charge of applying the age rating of all films from the major Hollywood studios and streaming services (Paramount, Sony, Universal, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Netflix, etc.) awarded to Joker 2 R Rating by:

“Some strong violence, constant language, some sexuality and brief full nudity.”

This is the same rating as the original movie, Joker (2019), although for different reasons: “strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language and brief sexual images.”

The new installment features the return of Zazie Beetz reprising her role as Sophie Dumond, and the additions of Catherine Keener (Get Out, The 40 Year Old Virgin), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, Harry Potter), Jacob Lofland (Mud), y Harry Lawtey (Industry).

The acclaimed JOKER (2019) by Phillips follows Arthur Fleck and his journey to becoming the crime clown, serving as the iconic villain's origin story, unfolding its plot in 1980s Gotham City.

Waiting to know details of the premise, It is known that it will have musical elements and that it will be set in Arkham Asylumwhich is where the first movie ends after Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) was sent there.

It has been confirmed that This film will exist outside of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCUthe new co-presidents of DC Studios.

Phillips co-wrote the script with Scott Silver. They both co-wrote Joker (2019).

SOME DATA:

• The literal translation of Folie à Deux is in English Madness for Two, and in Spanish Madness for two. But it's also a term for “shared psychosis” or “shared delusional disorder,” which could be a direct reference to Joker and Quinn.
• Joker is known for his on-again, off-again abusive relationship with Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at the mental institution known as Arkham Asylum, who falls in love with him and becomes his sidekick and partner in crime.
• Filming began in early December 2022 in Los Angeles, CA. Production later moved to NYC, where it spent around three to four weeks filming.
• This is one of the few projects that has not suffered changes, cancellations or modifications after the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery (details here).

The first film grossed $335.4 million and, worldwide, is the highest-grossing R-rated film in history with $1.007 million. Joker won two Oscars: Best Actor (Phoenix) and Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir). The film was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Phillips for Best Director. By November 2019, a few weeks after the film's theatrical release, WB gave the green light to the sequel about the DC villain.

Joker: Folie à Deux opens in theaters on October 4, 2024.
