During Marvel Studios' presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the biggest surprise revealed by Kevin Feige was the return of Robert Downey Jr. of the MCU.
Only this time he's not reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but rather playing the villain. Doctor Doom in the next two installments of Avengers, Avengers: Doomsday y Avengers: Secret Wars.
This decision officially concluded Marvel's plans for the fifth installment previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dinastyafter what Jonathan Majors, actor who had played the villain Kang the Conquererwas found guilty in December of misdemeanor assault and harassment of his now ex-girlfriend. The studio parted ways with the actor less than two hours after the verdict was announced, ending nearly a year of uncertainty about Majors’ future with Marvel following his arrest in March 2023.
Majors broke the silence on the news that revealed that Downey Jr. will play the new villain in the upcoming AvengersSpeaking to TMZ he said:
“Yes, it breaks my heart. Of course. I love Kang. However, Doctor Doom is evil.”
The outlet told Majors how the industry allowed Downey to return despite his history of legal troubles in the mid-'90s:
“I think it’s only fair that Mr. Downey has been met with patience and curiosity and love… and allowed to work his craft and be creative at that level. I really didn’t get that.”
And on whether he would return as Kang:
“Yeah, yeah, yeah! I love him. I love Kang. If that’s what the fans want, and that’s what Marvel wants, then let’s move forward. Yeah, yeah.”
Los Russo Brothers They will also return to the MCU, as directors of the fifth and sixth installments of AvengersDoomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026, and Secret Wars is set to hit theaters in May 2027.
Michael Waldron (Loki) will write the script for both films.
