ABOUT MONOPOLY
The multiplayer board game with an economic theme involves players rolling two dice to move around the board, buying and exchanging properties and developing them with houses and hotels. Players collect rent from their opponents and aim to bankrupt them. Money can also be won or lost through Chance and Community Chest cards and tax boxes. Players receive a salary each time they pass “Go” and can end up in jail, from which they cannot leave until they have met one of three conditions.
There are house rules, hundreds of different editions, many derivatives and related media. Monopoly has become part of international popular culture, being locally licensed in over 103 countries and printed in over 37 languages. In 2015, the game was estimated to have sold 275 million copies worldwide. The original game was based on locations in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States.
The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly: the dominance of a market by a single entity.
