In May 2023, Martin Scorsese announced that he was about to start preparing a film about Jesus Christ, during a visit he made to the Vatican where he met with Pope Francis.
Almost a year later, and preparations continue on the right track.
According to a report from Variety, the legendary 81-year-old filmmaker will not only make the film about Jesus, but also a biopic of Frank Sinatra, which we will talk about in a next entry. First we will share the information that is known from the movie about Jesus.
Scorsese will finance independently, without the help of the studio system, Life of Jesusbased on the book by Shūsaku Endō, published in 1973. Previously, Scorsese adapted Silence (2016), based on another book by Endō, which he also independently financed.
For Life of JesusScorsese wants to meet with Andrew Garfieldwith whom he collaborated in the aforementioned drama Silence. The source details that it has not been made known whether Garfield would be assuming the leading role, or as one of Jesus' disciples.
Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick, Whiplash) is also being sought to join the cast.
Filming is expected to begin later this year, in locations including Israel, Italy and Egypt.
When Scorsese announced a year ago that he would make a film about Jesus, he announced it this way:
“I have responded to the Pope's call to artists the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a script for a film about Jesus. And I'm about to start doing it.”
