Universal Pictures has a remake of Miami Vicewith the director Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1: The Movie).
The agreements to secure its protagonists are being developed right now. According to reports from Variety, Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) y Austin Butler (Elvis) are in the early stages of negotiation.
If a deal is reached, Jordan would play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, and Butler would play James “Sonny” Crockett, the affable South Florida detectives.
The roles were played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the classic 1980s television series, and by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the first film adaptation, in 2006, directed by Michael Mann.
The new version, according to an official synopsis, is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and shaped everything from fashion to film”.
The script was written by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick, American Hustle) y And Gilroy (Nightcrawler, Andor), based on the characters created by Anthony Yerkovich.
Dylan Clark and Kosinski are the producers of the remake.
Jordan has built a solid filmography for more than a decade, standing out with films such as Fruitvale Station, Just Mercy, Black Pantherthe franchise Creedand this year's installment, the acclaimed horror thriller Sinnerswhich starred her playing a double role, as two twins returning to their hometown, in search of a new beginning. Jordan is eyeing directing and starring in a new version of The Thomas Crown Affair para Amazon MGM Studios.
Butler, for his part, after starting his career in series like Zoey 101 y Switched at Birthhad his first big opportunity in film with Once Upon a Time… in Hollywoodand later became a revelation with his role as Elvis Presley in the biopic Elviswhich earned him a BAFTA and a Golden Globe, and an Oscar nomination for best actor. More recently he was part of Dune: Part Two in an antagonistic role and Caught Stealing as protagonist.
The production of the new Miami Viceis scheduled for 2026. It will be filmed for IMAX.
The premiere is set for August 6, 2027 in theaters.
