Mikey Madison Says He Underestimated 'Scream 5' Fans' Furious Reaction

In a recent interview with Collider, the protagonist of the acclaimed Anora, Mikey Madisonsaid that he underestimated the fury with which the fandom of Scream (2022) when it was revealed that her character, Amber Freeman, was one of the Ghostfaces in the installment, and the Ghostface responsible for the death of the beloved and popular character Dewey, played by David Arquette.

Madison told the outlet that she was unaware of the passionate fandom cultivated by the franchise. Scream when he accepted the role.

“I have to be honest, when I made the movie, it sounds naive, but I wasn't that aware of the huge fan base that the franchise has, which I've now been able to discover.. The fans of Scream and horror and people who love horror movies are the best people ever, but I really got into this naively.”

Madison continued:

“I remember being a little sad because I was thinking, 'Oh, that's a great character. It will be sad to see him go.' And then I realized the pain so many people were feeling. People have come up to me and said, 'I hate that this happened. I'm angry with you.' And I say, 'I'm so sorry, I didn't write the script!' I didn't want to do it.”

When she was told her character would be Ghostface, Madison thought:

“[Sería] fun. I would love to do it. “I would love to play this Ghostface character because it's a very interesting and fun reveal and it's also a very crazy and unpredictable arc for a character.”

The young actress is one of the main contenders to obtain an Oscar nomination for best actress for her leading performance in Anora of Sean Bakerwinner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2024.

Baker revealed that Madison's performance in Scream 5 and in Once Upon a Time in Hollywoodwas what convinced him to sign her for Anora.

Madison is Anoraa Brooklyn stripper who transforms into a modern-day Cinderella when she meets the son of a Russian oligarch. Complications arise when her parents find out and try to annul the marriage.
