Frontera (Judith Colell, 2025)

I believe that the issue of Jewish refugees who, fleeing Nazism, saved their lives by crossing the Spanish border (about 80,000 it is said in this film) has not been addressed in Spanish cinema. Colell does a professional job to illustrate the contradictions and unexpected synergies (a lieutenant of the Civil Guard who helps because he is interested in smuggling, a customs official who changed sides in the war…) that occurred in those cruel and turbulent first forties. The film lacks strength, especially in its first half, although the craftsmanship in assembling diverse elements must be recognized. A work to take into account, although irregular.

The blue path (Gabriel Mascaro, 2025)

The blue path (Gabriel Mascaro, 2025)

Of the limited cinema that comes to us from Brazil, we must congratulate ourselves for this dramatic comedy in the form of a ā€œroad movieā€ focused on Tereza, a 77-year-old woman who avoids confinement in a colony for the elderly and takes to the mountains on a trip through the Amazon. A small but enjoyable work, in the form of a certain fable that criticizes the paternalism with which power treats the elderly and the bureaucratization of governments to applaud the incorruptible freedom and independence that people must enjoy at any stage of their lives. In addition to applauding the leading actress, the viewer enjoys natural landscapes and the neighborhoods and homes on the riverbanks.

Continental '25 (Radu Jude, 2025)

Content '25 (Official Radu, 2025)

The always surprising Romanian director Radu Jude offers us a unique work that, underneath its plot, configures a certain critical chronicle about current society, talking about the war in Ukraine, the ominous Putin and the no less sinister Orban, exclusive nationalism, the rivalry and a certain contempt of Hungarians towards Romanians, the outdated discourse of Orthodox Christianity, real estate development, economic growth that leaves people in the gutter… Starting from the fact that a homeless person is evicted and commits suicide, Sheriff Orsolya, in great pain and even feeling guilty, suffers a crisis that leads her to question everything around her. Valuable and unique cinema, award for best script in Berlin, even though it is a handmade film shot with a mobile phone in ten days.

The song of the hands (MarĆa Valverde, 2025)

The song of the hands (MarĆa Valverde, 2025)

The Spanish actress MarĆa Valverde makes her debut behind the camera for a committed and emotional documentary about the incorporation of a group of deaf people into the National Network of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela program that seeks the integration of people at risk of social exclusion. The rehearsal of the opera ā€œFidelioā€ is documented with the Los Angeles Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, husband of the filmmaker and conductor of a good part of the story. The film has a lot of emotion and manages to convey the illusion of deaf people, which sensitizes the viewer, especially with the brief stories of some of them and the situations in which their self-esteem is raised. Very necessary cinema, even if it is not a spectacle.

Roofman. A thief on the roof (Derek Cianfrance, 2025)

Roofman. A Thief on the Roof (Derek Cianfrance, 2025)

At times it is a “silly comedy” that ends up dazzling the idle viewer and makes him pass the time. Other times we verify that, indeed, it is a silly comedy, without more. The true story of a McDonald's thief who escaped from prison and lived for six months hiding in a toy store was not suitable for a movie, especially for the exhibition of Channing Tatum who is like a nephew of Sylvester Stallone. But if we add a love story with Kirsten Dunst, things change; and it makes a point to see the most famous actor with achondroplasia saying that we don't have to grow up and we have to stay like children… It improves in the last section, when he opts for drama and a certain portrait of the protagonist. In any case, it seemed expendable to me.

Jay Kelly (Noah Baumbach, 2025) (sales and Netflix)

Jay Kelly (Noah Baumbach, 2025) (salas y Netflix)

In addition to being an actor, George Clooney has directed a dozen films, including critical works such as ā€œGood Night and Good Luckā€ or ā€œThe Ides of March.ā€ Now he is participating in a project written for him with the purpose of ā€œdeconstructingā€ a Hollywood star, the Jay Kelly of the title who could very well have been Clooney himself. I like films that talk about cinema and that's why I enjoy this piece that doesn't say very new things and, perhaps, is a little long. But it has charm, very gratifying irony and a very plausible portrait of the star.
