February 6, 2026 arrives loaded with movies that can be seen, perfect for an afternoon of cinema at home or in the living room. They stand out The president's cake by Hasan Hadi, with his poetic touch in Iraq in the 90s; three goodbyes by Isabel Coixet, an introspective melodrama about capricious love; Sofia's suspicion by Imanol Uribe on Amazon Prime; God sees it by Alex Guimerà and William Ventura in Filmin, profile of the artist Oscar Tusquets; y y One, X, two by Alberto Utrera on HBOMax, black comedy with Paco León.

The President's cake (Hasan Hadi, 2025)

In Iraq in the 1990s, there is a strong contrast between international sanctions that entail the absence of medicine or food and eventual bombings, and the triumphalism of a strongman regime that indoctrinates children and adorns the omnipresent portraits of Saddam Hussein on the occasion of his birthday. Lamia, a 9-year-old girl, is asked by the teacher to make an afternoon with that reason and she struggles to get the ingredients. It is noticeable that the director recreates his childhood and remembers the country in which he grew up: Lamia's wanderings, the separation from her grandmother, the complicity with the classmate who survives with petty thefts are very convincing… It may lack a little rhythm, but it has style, charming characters and some locations such as the hut on the river that increase the poetic breath of the story.

three goodbyes (Isabel Coixet, 2025)

Three goodbyes (Isabel Coixet, 2025)

In Coixet's most radical melodramas, love and pain are combined in unpredictable dialogues. This happens in “My life without me” or “The secret life of words”, and it is repeated in this adaptation of a novel that was filmed in Rome. As a melodrama it is a bit cold, but, in reality, Coixet is interested in the paradoxes and chances of love, and the unanswered questions about the feeling of love, which always escapes all logic, including that kind of impossible or utopia that it grows with agony. A film that does not catch you at first, but is very interesting as an essay on the chimera of apprehending or explaining the always capricious love.

Sofia's suspicion (Imanol Uribe, 2025) (Amazon Prime)

Sofia's Suspicion (Imanol Uribe, 2025) (Amazon Prime)

Everything seems to indicate that the renowned Imanol Uribe has been commissioned to adapt a successful novel to film. And he does his job as best he can from literary material that I fear is not very suitable for the screen, since the actions of two twins and their confusion so close to people like the wife of one of them are incredible. The production design is poor, with very crude photography and a setting with few resources. Although the actors do what they can, the result is below standards and the narrative itself seemed confusing to me.

God sees it (Alex Guimerà & Guillem Ventura, 2025) (Filmin)

God sees it (Alex Guimerà & William Ventura, 2025) (Filmin)

Non-fiction film that profiles the architect, designer and painter Óscar Tusquets, a conspicuous member of the Barcelona “gauche divine” of late Francoism. The camera follows this creator who meets with artist friends (Miquel Barceló, Antonio López, Albert Serra, Vargas Llosa, Isabel Coixet…) and they chat about art and creation; Curiously, little is said about Tusquets' works (a metro station in Naples, Casa Fullá, villa Andrea) and, at times, it is a somewhat self-absorbed documentary. In any case, a valuable piece for those interested in that group.

One, X, two (Alberto Utrera, 2025) (HBOMax)

One, X, Two (Alberto Utrera, 2025) (HBOMax)

Five friends (two couples and one recently separated) meet to eat and spend the day at a house. The host is awaiting the results of the soccer matches and the possibility of having successfully bet on the lottery. This expectation, old quarrels and chance lead to a progressive confrontation with fatal results. Black comedy that handles well the unity of action, space and time and some half-developed symbols (toadstools, hedgehogs). Perhaps somewhat well-known, it shows and confirms that Paco León is a great actor, also a dramatic one.
