On January 9, 2026, a selection of films arrives in theaters and platforms that will undoubtedly capture the attention of the most movie buffs: New wave by Richard Linklater pays an ingenious tribute to the French film movement by recreating the filming of Out of breath (At the end of the getaway) by Godard; Rounds by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo offers an optimistic comedy-drama in the tradition of popular cinema, evoking previous works by its director such as Fat o Cousins; The foreigner by François Ozon convincingly adapts Camus's novel with an enigmatic Meursault that invites debate; Private life by Rebecca Zlotowski presents an investigation plot with Jodie Foster as the main hook; and Belén by Dolores Fonsi on Amazon Prime strongly denounces the real case of an Argentine girl accused of abortion in 2014.
New wave (Richard Linklater, 2025)
The always surprising Texan director pays tribute to the New Wave generation, both directors (Godard, Truffaut, Chabrol, Rohmer, Rivette and other filmmakers of the time such as Resnais, Bresson, Rossellini and Melville) and producers and performers through a free and ingenious recreation of the filming of Out of breath (At the end of the getaway) by Jean-Luc Godard. In black and white and with a cast that seeks resemblance to the real characters, this fiction wants to pass as a docudrama. He may be criticized for inventing dialogues, but I think the result is convincing, including the portrait of a Godard as capricious as he was creative. Essential to have seen Out of breath to enjoy it and it will be re-released in theaters next week.
Rounds (Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, 2025)

The concept of “popular cinema” has a bad press because we associate it with commercial cinema, bland family films, mass-produced genre works or coarse-grained comedies with few neurons. But, to point out a tradition, the great American western of John Ford or Howard Hawks has been popular cinema. Bridging the gap, in that tradition of stories that fascinate us and characters capable of overcoming conflicts, without the need for a genuine discourse or any will other than to entertain, Sánchez Arévalo is situated with his dramatic comedies. Fat, Cousins o seventeene, to which is added this Rounds: a film recommended for its emotion and its willful optimism, very timely for these disbelieving times of public figures as false as they are manipulators.
The foreigner (François Ozon, 2025)

Ozon has dared with an adaptation that not even Visconti came out of satisfactorily. Tackling a well-known and emblematic novel of an era and a thought is daring and a challenge; but in this case we must recognize the convincing result, at least for those of us who, having read the novel, have a general idea of it and do not remember details. This enigmatic and indolent Meursault is still that of Albert Camus, and it is also ours because, located in the Algeria of a century ago, it says something about the temptation of self-absorption and escape from the hostile reality that disarms us. Or, as the director has said, “sometimes we all want to isolate ourselves from the world and stop feeling.” It raises more questions than answers, ideal for a film forum.
Private life (Rebecca Zlotowski, 2025)

It must be that I was having a stupid afternoon, because I didn't find out much about this proposal and I was about to leave the room in the final section. Jodie Foster is great, as is the rest of the cast, but the investigation plot about an alleged crime left me quite cold and the notes on the more or less recognizable characters and types didn't reach me… Maybe we should give it another chance another time.
Belén (Dolores Fonsi, 2025) (Amazon Prime)

Powerful denunciation drama that reconstructs the case of a girl accused of having an abortion in 2014 in Tucumán (Argentina) and imprisoned after a process with irregularities, with manipulation of evidence and a fundamentalist police and judicial system. Cinematographically irreproachable, it leaves you in a bad mood, even though the ending is hopeful, since the case involved a strong social mobilization.
