Cinemas in the United States had a fun battle between Mufasa: The Lion King from Disney and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 of Paramount Pictures to see who would take first place at the box office.

After a close competition, it was the prequel to the 2019 remake of The lion kingwho stayed at the top of the podium, thus winning the first weekend of 2025 at the national box office with $23.8 million dollars. Sonic 3 came in second place with $21.2 million dollars.

In the international market, Mufasa exceeded $300 million dollars, after having injected another $53.3 million dollars.

Its national total at the moment is $168.6 million dollars. To that we add $307.8 million dollars from the international box office, for a total of $476.4 million dollars in the global box office. This made it the tenth highest-grossing film of 2024.

The prequel directed by the Oscar winner, Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), sees the baboon Rafiki tell the legend of Mufasa to his granddaughter Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala. The story is told in flashbacks and follows Mufasa (which means “king” in Swahili) as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a friendly lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline.

The script was written by Jeff Nathanson (The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can). Nathanson scripted the remake of the king lion of 2019.

The cast that lends its voice is made up of Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge, Genius) as Mufasa (in previous installments voiced by James Earl Jones), with Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Genius, Elvis) like Taka, the returns of Donald Glover y Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Simba and Nala, respectively, with the latter's daughter, Blue Ivy Carter making her film debut lending her voice to Kara, and those of Seth Rogen y Billy Eichner like Timon and Pumbaa. The new additions also include Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round) y Thank you Newton (Westworld).

Lin-Manuel Miranda He composed the film's original soundtrack.

SYNOPSIS:

“Mufasa: The Lion King recruits Rafiki to pass on the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature trick. Told in flashbacks, the story presents Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a friendly lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey for an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny: their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a deadly and menacing enemy.”

Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak produce the feature film, with Peter Tobyansen serving as executive producer.
