In December we will see the most iconic vampire in cinema again, Nosferatu, with the remake of the horror classic Nosferatuby the screenwriter and director Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman), and the studios Focus Features and Universal Pictures
From Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's 1922 silent classic, which unofficially adapts the story from Bram Stroker's book, Draculauntil the 1979 version of Werner Herzogy Shadow of the Vampire by E. Elias Merhige from the year 2000. Nosferatu remains in the minds of the audience through the years and it is time to see it once again.
For his version, Eggers looked for real places that could pass as a vampire's lair. According to Empire Magazine, Count Orlok's gatehouse and hook courtyard in Eggers' film were filmed at Pernštejn Castle in the Czech Republic.
Regarding this particularity, Eggers explained to the media that he did not realize that this location had already been used previously in the story of Nosferatu in the cinema:
“It was actually used as a castle for Nosferatu [1979] by Werner Herzog. But I hadn't consciously seen that movie, so it didn't occur to me.”
“We were able to use Herzog Castle without using Herzog Castle, which was great.”
The cast of the remake is made up of Bill Skarsgård (The Crow, Barbarian, It) as Count Orlock of this version, Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol, Silent Night) as Ellen Hutter, wife of the real estate agent, Thomas, of Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, Renfield), Emma Corrin (The Crown, My Policeman), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter, Nocturnal Animals), Simon McBurney (The Conjuring 2, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), Ralph Ineson (The Witch, The Northman), y Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse, The Northman) as Professor Albin Eberthart Von Franz, vampire hunter.
The outlet shared a new look at Hoult in the vicinity of the castle, which is available at the end of this note.
SYNOPSIS NOSPHERE:
“In the new reinvention, Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient vampire of Transylvania (Bill Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing with him unspeakable horror.”
Eggers wrote and directed the remake, as well as producing it alongside Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus.
Previously, Eggers shared about his film:
“Yes, it's a scary movie. It's a horror movie. It's a gothic horror movie. And I think there hasn't been a scary old school gothic movie in a while. And I think most audiences will find this to be the case.”
Eggers earned critical and audience recognition with his debut feature, the independent horror film The Witch (2016), which is classified by many as their favorite of the modern times genre. In 2019 he presented his second feature film, the also acclaimed film The Lighthouse, while in 2022 he launched his thirdthe epic Viking revenge adventure, The Northman.
Nosferatu premieres December 25, 2024 in theaters of the United States, and January 1 in Mexico and the rest of Latin America. Universal Pictures distributes in the international market.
