On the morning of this Wednesday, January 8, the Actors Guild (SAG; Screen Actors Guild) reveló the 2025 SAG Awards nominations.
The announcement, which is traditionally done live, had to be canceled at the last minute as a result of the wildfires in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, which began the night of January 7 with three major outbreaks. Los Angeles is in a state of emergency, so the SAG organizers chose to cancel the live announcement and announce their list of nominees through digital media.
The SAG selection committee is comprised of 2,500 members selected from a total of approximately 160,000 members.
The nominations of the 31st edition of the SAG Awardsare led in the film field by Wicked with 5 candidates y A Complete Unknownwith 4 nominations.
It is no surprise that the guild, which generally tends to be more populist than the rest of the awards, has leaned towards box office hits such as the adaptation of the musical Wicked and the biopic about Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown. Both films received nominations for Best Ensemble, which many see as the equivalent of the Best Picture category.
They share that category with Anora, Conclave y Emilia Perez.
SOME INFORMATION:
- The nomination of Karla Sofia Gascón by Emilia Perezis historic, making her the first openly transgender actress nominated in the SAG film categories.
- With 5 nominations, Wicked tied the record for most nominations for a film, an achievement previously achieved by Shakespeare in Love (1998), Chicago (2002), Doubt (2008), The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), y Everything Everywhere All at Once (2002).
- Of those mentioned, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago y Everything Everywhere all at Once they won Best Ensemble and later the Oscar for Best Picture.
- Since the Best Ensemble category was included in the SAG Awards in 1995, only Braveheart, The Shape of Water, Green Book y Nomadlandhave won the Oscar for Best Picture without being nominated for Best Cast at the SAGs.
