Last week, Scream 7 debuted breaking franchise records, with a gross of $64.1 million at the domestic box office, surpassing expert projections that placed it with a premiere between $40-60 million. At the global box office it had a premiere of $94.2 million.

The latest sequel to the long-running slasher franchise from Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media, entered its second weekend in theaters where it faltered with a drop of 74%reporting a estimated collection of $17.3 million dollars (via Variety).

Despite this sharp decline, the horror sequel remained profitable, raising its national total to $93.3 million dollarsan enviable figure for a horror film project. Worldwide it accumulated $149.4 million dollars over the weekend and reached $150 million dollars on Monday.

Las Massive drops are typical in the second weekend in theaters for horror movies. The percentage of a standard fall of the genre is 55% to 65%, while very few exceptions (Sinners, Smile, A Quiet Place, Get Out) defy the trend and manage to remain stable with minimal percentage declines. To this we add that Scream 7 is rowing against the current, with specialized critics – and the fans of its former protagonist Melissa Barrera – completely against it, and the support of the fandom in its favor.

FUN FACTS:

  • Even with a drop of 74%, Scream 7 achieved a better position in the box office over the weekend than the premiere of The Bride! from Warner Bros.
  • Scream VI (2023) experienced a 61% drop in its second weekend in theaters, grossing $17.3 million, the same figure as Scream 7.
  • Scream 7 is on track to surpass the original 1996 film, Screamalready its 1997 sequel, Scream 2which grossed $173 million and $172 million, respectively. By achieving this, will be crowned the highest-grossing installment of the slasher franchisewhich this year marks 30 years since its release in theaters.

Their main three international markets are: United Kingdom, France and Mexico ($3 million).

The budget for this installment was $45 million dollars ($10 million more than the sixth film) plus marketing costs. It is already generating profits for the studios.

The absence of Neve Campbell in the previous film and its return in the most recent sequel, is undoubtedly playing a key role in its audience appeal.

A BILLION BOX OFFICE FRANCHISE

Prior to the theatrical release of Scream 7, The combined global box office of the first six installments was more than $908 million dollars, so, if we add the current box office of the most recent sequel, Scream can presume to be a billion-dollar franchise ($1.058 billion and counting). Only five other horror franchises have grossed more than $1 billion at the global box office: The Conjuring ($2,900 mdd), Alien ($1,500 mdd), Resident Evil ($1,300 mdd), IT ($1,170 mdd), y Saw ($1,100 mdd).

By the way, Scream It is the only SLASHER franchise to appear on the list.

The sequel features the long-awaited return of Neve Campbell as the Scream Queen and Final Girl, Sidney Prescott, after being absent from the sixth film due to a salary dispute that was resolved for the seventh film; the one of Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, as the only member of the cast to be part of all the installments of the saga; and the creator of the franchise, Kevin Williamsonscreenwriter of the 1996 original, and the sequels Scream 2 y Scream 4, taking charge of directing one of the installments for the first time in the history of the franchise.

Another surprise are the returns of Matthew Lillard (Scream) y Scott Foley (Scream 3), who played Ghostface in the first and third installments, respectively, and that of David Arquette like Dewey, who died in the fifth film. To know the nature of his appearances, we recommend not getting spoilers and going to the cinema to see Scream 7.

In the new sequel, Sidney (Campbell) must face Ghostface once again, after the masked villain threatens what she loves most: her daughter, Tatum (played by Isabel May of 1883), whose name is a nod to Sidney's best friend in the original installment, Tatum Riley (played by Rose McGowan).

Other new additions include Celeste O’Connor (Freaky), Asa Germann (The Boys), Mckenna Grace (Five Nights at Freddy’s 2), Sam Calculator (The Fabelmans), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Mark Consuelos (Live with Kelly & Mark), Ethan Embry (Grace and Fankie), Timothy Simmons (Nobody Wants This), Michelle Randolph (Landman, 1923), Jimmy Tatro (You’re Cordially Invited), y Joel McHale (Community) as Mark Evans, Sidney's husband.
