Ingredients
2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons wheat flour
2 cups of milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Nutmeg (optional)
Directions
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat until completely melted.
- Add the wheat flour to the pan with the melted butter.
Stir constantly with a fouet or wooden spoon to incorporate the flour into the butter and form a paste (roux).
Cook the mixture for about 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly. - Gradually add the milk to the pan, little by little, stirring vigorously to prevent lumps from forming.
Make sure the milk is fully incorporated into the roux before adding more. - Continue cooking the sauce over low to medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until it begins to thicken.
This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
The sauce is ready when it reaches the desired consistency, thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. - Season the sauce with salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste.
Taste and adjust seasonings to your preference. - Remove the sauce from the heat and it’s ready to be used as a side dish or an ingredient in your favorite recipes.
