Sony Pictures and 3000 Pictures are developing a remake of the iconic 1992 thriller, Single White Femaleknown in our market as Single woman lookingcon Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) y Taylor Russell (Escape Room) in leading roles.
The project, announced in March 2025, advances in its development by signing Sarah DeLappe as its screenwriter (via Deadline).
DeLappe wrote the script for the horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) by A24, which enjoyed critical and commercial success, he also wrote an episode of the HBO series, The Regime.
In addition to the addition of the screenwriter, Stacey Sher (Contagion, Heretic) y Marisa Paiva as producers alongside Ortega and Russell.
The original film, directed by Barbet Schroeder, starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The plot follows Allison “Allie” Jones (Fonda), a software designer living in New York, who is looking for a roommate after discovering that her fiancé Sam Rawson (Steven Weber), with whom she lives, is cheating on her. Allie welcomes her new tenant, Hedra Carlson (Leigh) and quickly establishes a close relationship with her new roommate. However, as Allison reconsiders her breakup with Sam, her partner becomes jealous and violent. It was based on the novel SWF Seeks Same by John Lutz, published in 1990. Lutz wrote the script with Don Roos. The film had a sequel Single White Female 2: The Psychostarring Kristen Miller which had a direct-to-home release.
The film distributed by Sony's Columbia Pictures was not only an unexpected hit, grossing $84.1 million at the global box office ($195.8 million today for inflation), but it turned its leads, Fonda and Leigh, into stars.
Ortega is currently in production on the third season of Wednesday from Netflix; later we will see her in the feature film Klara and the Sun by Taika Waititi and Sony Pictures, and The Great Beyond by JJ Abrams and Warner Bros.
Russell, for his part, will star Hope from director Na Hong-jin. He led the cast of the franchise Escape Roomand co-starred in the drama Bones and All by Luca Guadagnino.
