Last December 20, Paramount Pictures premiered in theaters Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Since its launch, it has gone head to head with Mufasa: The Lion Kingin which it represented a fun battle between two Christmas season projects.

Now, with the first weekend of 2025 over, Sonic 3 placed second at the domestic box office with $21.2 million, bringing its domestic box office total to $187.5 million.

In the international market it added $51.2 million dollars, for an international total of $148.8 million, and $336.3 million dollars in the global box office.

These figures brought with them a new achievement for Sonic y Paramount.

Paramount announced on Sunday that the franchise, based on the Sega video game, has surpassed the billion-dollar mark in tickets sold worldwide. The trilogy has been a great commercial success for the studio.

Prior to the premiere of Sonic 3the combined global box office of the first two films accumulated a total of $870.8 million. In addition to the film franchise, the spinoff series was created Knuckles and el streamer Paramount+.

Sonic 3 is marking the cinematic debut of Shadow, one of Sonic's enemies, considered in many ways the anti-Sonic.

It was created by Dr. Gerald Robotnik, grandfather of Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey). He was genetically modified with alien DNA, a speedster with teleportation powers. Shadow debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 2001. For his film debut, his voice is provided by Keanu Reeves.

This third installment of the franchise Sonic the Hedgehog of the director Jeff Fowler (director of all three films), explores new areas of the video game universe created by SEGA.

The cast features the returns of Carrey, Ben Schwartz lending his voice to Sonic, James Marsden like Tom Wachowski, Colleen O’Shaughnessey lending his voice to Tails, and Idris Elba a Knuckles. Con Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally y Lee Majdoub, Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Alyla Browne (Furious), James Cloud (Watchmen), Sofia Pernas (Jane the Virgin), Cristo Fernandez (Ted Lasso), y Jorma Taccone (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) completing the cast.
