Held annually in the last two weeks of January, it is recognized as the industry's premier independent film festival. The Sundance Institute Filmmakers/Directors Lab was founded in 1981 by Redford to bring together colleagues to foster and support independent film.
Before the end of each edition, awards are given to the most outstanding, with the Grand Jury Prize being its most important award.
In 1991 it changed its name to Sundance Film Festival.
