In June 2024, the Warner Bros. studio announced that it had launched Practical Magic 2a sequel to the 1998 fantasy romance film, Practical Magic.

The most recent news announces that the filmmaker Susanne Bier is entering into negotiations with the studio to direct the sequel, without currently signing an agreement, Deadline reported.

The protagonists of the original film, Sandra Bullock y Nicole Kidman are confirmed to reprise their roles in the new installment as sisters Sally Owens and Gillian Owens, respectively. Those news were revealed by Kidman last June, saying, “Yes, I will be in it. and sandy [Bullock] will be in it. There's a lot more to tell, so we say, 'Okay, now it's interesting to be able to do this.' [Hemos] Found a way to do it.”

If Bier is appointed director, it would mark a new collaboration between the filmmaker and the actresses. Bier coached Bullock in Bird Box from Netflix, and Kidman in the series The Undoing from HBO and The Perfect Couple the Netflix.

Akiva Goldsmanco-writer of the original installment, will write the script for the sequel. Bullock and Kidman will produce it alongside Denise Di Novi, producer of the original.

At the moment no details about the plot have been revealed.

The original 1998 film, titled in our market as love spellfollows two sisters, Sally (Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Kidman), who come from a long line of witches. Orphaned at a young age, they are raised by their eccentric aunts (played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest), who embrace their magical heritage. However, the Owens family is cursed: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to an early death.

Sally and Gillian struggle with their powers and the consequences of the family curse. Sally tries to lead a normal life, distancing herself from magic, but tragedy strikes when her husband dies. Gillian, on the other hand, lives a wild life and takes advantage of her magical abilities. The sisters become involved in an event where they fight to break the family curse. Griffin Dunne directed it. The screenplay was adapted from the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman.

The rest of the cast was made up of Evan Rachel Wood, Goran Visnjic, Mark Feuerstein, and Aidan Quinn.

The film accumulated more than $68 million in the global box office

Bier is an Oscar-winning filmmaker (best international film for In a Better World in 2011), Emmy and DGA, and the creative mind behind series like The Night Manager, The Undoing, The First Ladyy The Perfect Couple. Bier is the first director to win the Golden Globe, Emmy and European Film Award. He received another Oscar nomination for After the Wedding (2007) in the best international film category.
